Intent

The intent of our art and design curriculum is designed to ignite creativity, foster artistic expression, and cultivate a deep appreciation for visual arts among our children. Through engaging lessons and hands-on experiences, we aim to achieve the following objectives:

  1. Exploration of Painting: We intend to introduce our children to various painting techniques, mediums, and styles, enabling them to experiment with colours, textures, and compositions. By providing opportunities for self-expression through painting, we seek to nurture their confidence and imagination.

  2. Development of Drawing Skills: Our curriculum aims to develop fundamental drawing skills, including line, shape, form, and perspective. Through guided practice and observation, our children will learn to communicate ideas and emotions effectively through drawings. We aim to encourage perseverance and attention to detail in their artistic endeavours.

  3. Introduction to Sculpture: We aspire to introduce our children to the world of sculpture, where they will explore three-dimensional forms, materials, and techniques. From modelling clay to constructing with found objects, our goal is to inspire creativity and problem-solving skills as children bring their ideas to life in tangible forms.

  4. Integration of Art History and Culture: In addition to hands-on art-making experiences, our curriculum will incorporate lessons on art history and cultural diversity. By studying the works of renowned artists and exploring various cultural art forms, students will gain a deeper understanding of the role of art in society and its significance across different civilizations.

  5. Promotion of Critical Thinking and Reflection: Through art critique sessions and reflective activities, we aim to cultivate critical thinking skills in our children. By encouraging them to analyse and evaluate their own work and that of their peers, we foster a culture of constructive feedback and continuous improvement.

  6. Celebration of Creativity and Individuality: Above all, our art curriculum celebrates the uniqueness of each child's artistic voice. We strive to create a supportive and inclusive environment where children feel empowered to express themselves authentically and take pride in their creative achievements.

Through these objectives, we aspire to instil a lifelong passion for the arts in our children, equipping them with essential skills and knowledge to thrive as creative individuals in an ever-evolving world.

Implementation

Through a variety of creative and practical activities, we teach the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in the key practices of drawing, painting and mixed media and sculpture and 3D. Our planning follows an overall design, with five key strands that run throughout:

  • Generating ideas
  • Using sketchbooks
  • Making skills, including formal elements (line, shape, tone, texture, pattern, colour)
  • Knowledge of artists
  • Evaluating and analysing

Our planning is guided by the Kapow scheme of work for Years 1-6. This may be adapted to meet the particular needs and requirements of our children, ensuring the National Curriculum is followed. Year 1 and 2 follow a single aged plan and for years 3/4 and 5/6, we follow a mixed age plan over a two year cycle. Key concepts, skills, and technical vocabulary for Art and Design have been mapped across the school to ensure clear progression through the year groups. Units of lessons are sequential, allowing children to build their skills and knowledge, applying them to a range of outcomes. The formal elements, a key part of the National Curriculum, are also woven throughout units. Key skills are revisited again and again with increasing complexity in a spiral curriculum model. This allows pupils to revise and build on their previous learning. Art and Design lessons may also be taught as a block so that children’s learning is better focused throughout each unit of work.

We offer enrichment opportunities for Art and Design such as an after-school art club where children can further explore their interests in painting, drawing, and sculpture through extended projects and collaborative activities. We develop partnerships with local artists to provide students with workshops and real-world insights into the art community.

Impact

Our Art and Design curriculum is crafted to significantly impact our children’s lives by fostering creativity, critical thinking, and a deep appreciation for the arts. Through this curriculum, we aim to instil the values of love, courage, and service, creating a nurturing and inclusive environment where every child can thrive.

Cultivating Love for the Arts:

  • Love for Creativity: Our curriculum nurtures a passion for artistic expression, allowing students to discover and develop their unique creative voices. By engaging in painting, drawing, and sculpture, children learn to appreciate the beauty in their surroundings and in their own creations.
  • Appreciation of Diversity: Through the study of various art forms and cultural histories, children develop a love and respect for the rich tapestry of global artistic traditions. This fosters empathy and a deeper understanding of different cultures and perspectives.

Encouraging Courage in Expression:

  • Confidence in Creativity: By providing a safe space for experimentation and self-expression, our curriculum encourages children to take creative risks and explore new ideas. This builds their confidence not only in their artistic abilities but also in their overall problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Resilience and Perseverance: Art-making involves trial and error, and through this process, children learn the value of perseverance. They develop the courage to face challenges, embrace failures as learning opportunities, and continue striving towards their creative goals.

Promoting Service through Art:

  • Collaborative Projects: By working together on group projects and participating in the after-school art club, children learn the value of teamwork, cooperation, and supporting one another. These experiences teach them that art can be a powerful tool for bringing people together and effecting positive change.

Overall Impact:

  • Holistic Development: Our Art and Design curriculum supports the holistic development of children, integrating cognitive, emotional, and social growth. It prepares them to be well-rounded individuals who can think creatively and act compassionately.
  • Lifelong Appreciation: By instilling a lifelong love for the arts, courage to express themselves, and a sense of service to their community, our children leave with the tools to become not only skilled artists but also thoughtful, courageous, and empathetic individuals.
  • Legacy of Values: The values of love, courage, and service cultivated through our curriculum extend beyond the classroom. Children carry these principles into their daily lives, becoming advocates for beauty, bravery, and community engagement in all their future endeavours.

In summary, our Art and Design curriculum profoundly impacts our children by nurturing their creative talents and instilling core values that will guide them throughout their lives. Through love for the arts, courage in expression, and a commitment to service, our students are empowered to make meaningful contributions to the world around them.
